SIT Programs

CIEE has a program in Rabat Morocco called the Language and Culture Program and ISA, another large study abroad provider, hosts the Arabic Studies, International Relations & Language Program in Meknes, Morocco. Both are pre-approved programs by Bucknell for study abroad.

  • Required Courses:

    • Two-week Intensive Moroccan Colloquial Arabic

    • Semester-long Modern Standard Arabic

    • Three CIEE electives

Housing/ Meals:

  • Homestays: Students live with an Arabic- or French-speaking family in a modern or traditional home, in a Rabat neighborhood or in the outskirts of the city. Families are carefully selected by local CIEE staff members and matched carefully, according to student preferences. Most homes combine Western and traditional Moroccan elements, and families are typically multilingual. Internet is provided and students commute via public transportation. 

  • Apartments: Students can also choose to stay in shared apartments with other program participants. Students commute via public transportation.

  • Meals:

    • Homestay students have breakfast and dinner with their host families on weekdays, and additional meals on weekends. Students in apartments are responsible for their own meals.

Internship/ Volunteer/ Research opportunities:

  • Students have the opportunity to engage in Service-Learning projects to get to know the Rabat community by helping refugees, immigrants, women, or children. One might: 

    • work with sub-Saharan African migrants and refugees

    • tutor English at the community center

    • shadow a doctor at a children’s hospital

    • promote human rights values through working with local NGOs

    • promote democracy working with NGOs and the parliament

    • work with an international local NGO focused on culture and art

  • Students can also participate in Internships. CIEE Rabat offers internship placements in varying industries including: 

    • Human rights, education, children in need, women’s empowerment, micro-finance, journalism, NGO support, midwifery, nursing, and more through partnerships with local and international Non-Governmental Organizations, (NGO).

ISA MEKNES, MOROCCO: ARABIC STUDIES, INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS & LANGUAGE PROGRAM

Classes: 

  • ISA offers a large number of Arabic, FusHa and Darija, and French language courses that vary in level from Beginner to High Advanced.

Housing/ Meals:

  • Homestay: Host families are best if you are seeking full linguistic and cultural immersion during your time abroad. Homestays are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, and availability is limited. Each host family has been carefully selected by ISA's resident staff in order to best accommodate your needs and to ensure a comfortable living situation. Homestays will provide three meals a day (except on Sundays and ISA excursion days) and laundry service once a week. You will typically share a room with another ISA student of the same gender.

  • Apartment: Apartments are a great housing option if you are seeking independence during your time abroad. Apartments are assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis. Rent and utilities are included in the program price, and each apartment is fully furnished. The apartments are located in the center of Ville Nouvelle, the "new city" section of Meknes. Apartments typically house 6-7 ISA students of the same gender, with shared room occupancy. You will be provided with three meals a day (except on Sundays and ISA excursion days) and the services of a housekeeper.

  • ISA offers ‘Service-learning’ opportunities which are volunteer/ internship opportunities to develop one’s intercultural competency skills and increase one’s understanding of social issues in their host community.
