SIT Programs
SIT is a large study abroad provider that hosts two different thematic programs in Amman, Jordan. The Geopolitics, International Relations, and the Future of the Middle East program and the Refugees, Health, and Humanitarian Action Program are both pre-approved by Bucknell for study abroad.

SITÂ GEOPOLITICS, INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS, AND THE FUTURE OF THE MIDDLE EAST PROGRAM

Required Prerequisites:
None
Classes:
Students choose to take either two thematic seminars and 1 Arabic language course or one thematic seminar and two Arabic language courses.
Thematic course options cover subjects such as Geopolitics, International Relations, and the Future of the Middle East, The Psychology of Peace, Research Methods and Ethics, or the choice to pursue an independent study.
There are Arabic language courses offered for all levels.
Excursions:
Longer Trip to Turkey: In Istanbul, students have a rich context to learn about a different perspective on international relations and the Turkish influence in shaping the future of the Middle East. Students also learn about socio political minorities such as the Kurds, the Syrians, and international investors. Students also meet with peers from Istanbul University and visit Old Istanbul to discuss the role of Turkey in Syria and Turkey’s relations with Iran, Israel, and world powers such as Russia, the US, and the EU. During this excursion, students will meet with peers from Istanbul University and visit Old Istanbul, the Blue Mosque, Haga Sofia, Topkapi Palace, the Grand Bazaar, and Suleymaniye Library and Mosque. They also have the opportunity to enjoy a boat cruise on the Bosphorus reaching close to the black sea.

Housing/ Meals:
Homestay: You’ll live with a homestay family in West Amman for the entire 12-week program except during excursions. The homestay is a unique opportunity to become a member of an Arabic family, share meals with them, and take part in special occasions. Jordan is known for its warm hospitality. Most homestay families are middle class and maintain the customs of a typical Arab home.

Excursions:
Longer Trip to Switzerland: Students will spend most of their stay in the capital, Geneva. Here, they will have the opportunity to engage with experts about the international refugee system and learn about the challenges facing health relief agencies providing refugee protection and assistance. Students will visit the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, the International Committee of the Red Cross, the World Health Organization, and the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs as well as explore the city and neighboring Lausanne.
