SIT Programs

SIT is a large study abroad provider that hosts two different thematic programs in Amman, Jordan. The Geopolitics, International Relations, and the Future of the Middle East program and the Refugees, Health, and Humanitarian Action Program are both pre-approved by Bucknell for study abroad.

Jordan- SIT: Programs

SIT GEOPOLITICS, INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS, AND THE FUTURE OF THE MIDDLE EAST PROGRAM

Program Details

Deadlines

  • Fall 2021: May 15, 2021

  • Spring 2022: November 1, 2021

Dates: 

  • Fall 2021: September 4 - December 17, 2021

  • Spring 2022: late January - early June 2022

Costs:

  • Fall or Spring Semester: ~$20,800 (Scholarships available, Click Here for more info about SIT Scholarships)

Required Prerequisites: 

  • None

Classes: 

  • Students choose to take either two thematic seminars and 1 Arabic language course or one thematic seminar and two Arabic language courses.

  • Thematic course options cover subjects such as Geopolitics, International Relations, and the Future of the Middle East, The Psychology of Peace, Research Methods and Ethics, or the choice to pursue an independent study. 

  • There are Arabic language courses offered for all levels.

Excursions:

  • Longer Trip to Turkey: In Istanbul, students have a rich context to learn about a different perspective on international relations and the Turkish influence in shaping the future of the Middle East. Students also learn about socio political minorities such as the Kurds, the Syrians, and international investors. Students also meet with peers from Istanbul University and visit Old Istanbul to discuss the role of Turkey in Syria and Turkey’s relations with Iran, Israel, and world powers such as Russia, the US, and the EU. During this excursion, students will meet with peers from Istanbul University and visit Old Istanbul, the Blue Mosque, Haga Sofia, Topkapi Palace, the Grand Bazaar, and Suleymaniye Library and Mosque. They also have the opportunity to enjoy a boat cruise on the Bosphorus reaching close to the black sea.

Housing/ Meals:

  • Homestay: You’ll live with a homestay family in West Amman for the entire 12-week program except during excursions. The homestay is a unique opportunity to become a member of an Arabic family, share meals with them, and take part in special occasions. Jordan is known for its warm hospitality. Most homestay families are middle class and maintain the customs of a typical Arab home.

  • Other accommodations: Hostels and small hotels

Internship/ Volunteer/ Research opportunities:

  • Students have the opportunity to pursue a four-week internship with a local community organization, research organization, business, or international NGO. Previous internships students have had were...

    • Assisting efforts toward mutual understanding at Global Nomads Group

    • Conducting political and international research at the University of Jordan’s Center for Strategic Studies

    • Aiding educational initiatives at Madrasati

    • Working on humanitarian projects at Jordan’s National Center for Human Rights

  • Students can also pursue an independent study that counts as one of their thematic courses. Students in the past have studied topics like…

    • the Jordanian political system; Jordan’s foreign policy; the Arab Spring, refugees, nongovernmental organizations, and the Jordanian internal arena; state power and the regulation of Islam; gender and forms of sexual expression, etc.

  • Thematic course options cover subjects such as Refugees and Displaced Populations in the Context of Jordan, Refugee Health and Humanitarian Action, Research Methods and Ethics, or the choice to pursue an independent study. 

  • There are Arabic language courses offered for all levels.

Excursions:

  • Longer Trip to Switzerland: Students will spend most of their stay in the capital, Geneva. Here, they will have the opportunity to engage with experts about the international refugee system and learn about the challenges facing health relief agencies providing refugee protection and assistance. Students will visit the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, the International Committee of the Red Cross, the World Health Organization, and the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs as well as explore the city and neighboring Lausanne.

    • Assisting epidemiologists with the Eastern Mediterranean Public Health Network

    • Promoting health awareness with the Jordan Health Aid Society

    • Supporting the efforts of Arab Renaissance for Democracy and Development-Legal Aid to raise legal awareness among vulnerable populations, fight injustice, and promote equality

    • Assisting the International Committee of the Red Cross’s humanitarian responses to Syrian refugees and Jordanian host communities

    • Helping Palestinian refugees get access to healthcare with the United Nations Works and Relief Agency for Palestine Refugees
