Field Trips/ Extracurriculars:
There are many field trips and excursions hosted by the CIEE faculty and staff. The first week of the program there is a tour of Amman in order to visit the ruins overlooking Amman, the Roman amphitheater, downtown Amman, and more. For AAL students, every Tuesday instead of class there is a programmed activity either at the CIEE center or around Amman to develop their Arabic Language skills and become more familiar with Jordanian culture. Typically the highlight of the semester is a mid-semester rural retreat where the entire program travels Jordan for a week stopping in the south at Wadi Rum and Petra before traveling north along the Dead Sea (stopping there too) to the forested region of the country.
Housing/ Meals:
There are three options for housing with CIEE in Amman, a homestay, living in an apartment, or the Beit Al-Arabi house. Meals differ based on which option you chose.
Homestay: All homestays are located in Western Amman (which is a nice area of the city) which means that there should be no worry about basic amenities. All homestays have running water (variably hot), bathrooms, and provide breakfast and dinner during the week and all means on the weekend. As well, most homestays have wifi (however some do not but there is always a coffee shop nearby that you can use wifi from as well as using your data) and you get your own room. Homestays are a great opportunity to continue to practice your language skills as well as truly immersing yourself in the culture.
Apartment: The apartments are not all in one central location but like the homestays they are located in nice areas of Amman and have all the utilities of a normal apartment at an American university. Most people are paired with other students in the apartments however there is the opportunity to have your own bedroom. You are expected to feed yourself for every meal, however there is a fully equipped kitchen and fridge/ freezer so you can make your own food.
Beit Al-Arabi: This is an apartment located, depending on traffic, 15-30 min away from the CIEE Center. The apartment has two bedrooms (and can sleep up to 4 people), two bathrooms, a kitchen, common area, and outside area. The kitchen is fully equipped with all essentials and, like the apartments, students are expected to feed themselves for every meal. This apartment also acts as the location where students have some of their cultural extracurriculars like cooking with your professors or playing Arabic board games.
Internship/ Volunteer/ Research opportunities:
Due to the rigor of the Advanced Arabic Language program students rarely have the time to participate in these opportunities. If this is something that is very appealing to you, the CIEE Middle East Studies Program (Amman, Jordan) offers these opportunities.
